e-Go Open

Welcome to the e-Go Congress Online Open! This page contains all the information players need to participate. Please read this page carefully and reach out to the TD at open@gocongress.org with any questions.

The e-Go Open will take place on the Online Go Server (OGS). Please make sure you have joined the American Go Association (AGA) group on OGS, which is where important announcements will be posted. Please also check back on this page frequently, as useful links to pairs and results will be posted here.

If you suspect that your opponent used aids (AI, books, stronger players) during the game to improve their play, please email the TD at open@gocongress.org and include the evidence for your suspicions. For more information, see this video.

Here is the process that we will be using for rounds 2, 3, and 4 of the e-Go Open. You can find a video walkthrough here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qlmoJQgqxtc

1. 45 minutes before the start of the round, the TD will post a link to a .pdf of the pairing sheet to this web page, to OGS, and through other channels. The pairing sheet will list players by the OGS handle they registered with. Pairs will be posted in the section just below this.

2. Players will need to find themselves on the pairing sheet and then find their opponent. Once you have found your opponent, message them on OGS to confirm they are the right person and that they will be ready to play at the start of the round. One of the players will need to send a challenge to the other. Please wait until the start of the round to start your games. The start times for each round can be found lower down on this page.

3. Format your game according to the description below. You can also click here for a screenshot of how to correctly format the game on OGS. Please be sure to select the right color. Only set a handicap if a handicap is noted in the “Hd” column of the pairing sheet.

4. Once your game is finished, please report your results using the report submission form found here: https://forms.gle/kCFnydtRdjzE6BNn6 – If you opponent does not show up, please put “no show” where it asks for a game URL. Both players should submit the form if possible so we can validate results faster.

Player List: You can find a player list of OGS usernames here. Please note the far-right “participation” column indicates which rounds you are scheduled to play in. There are only three rounds listed there to indicate rounds 2, 3, and 4 of the Open.

Description: e-Go Congress Open is a four-round, Swiss-McMahon style tournament. It is the main tournament of the e-Go Congress.

Schedule:
Round 1: Saturday July 17, 4pm EDT to 7pm EDT
Round 2: Sunday July 18, 1pm EDT to 4m EDT
Round 3: Sunday July 18, 7pm EDT to 10pm EDT
Round 4: Saturday July 24, 1pm EDT to 4pm EDT

Time Settings: 1 hour main time, 5 periods of 30 seconds byo-yomi (for all players)

Platform: The e-Go Congress Open will be hosted on OGS. For more information, check out the OGS e-Go Congress handbook.

Byes: If you have to skip a round, you must request a “bye” from the TD as soon as possible. You can email the TD at open@gocongress.org. If a bye is not requested ahead of time and you miss a round, you will automatically forfeit the game.

Please request a bye if you cannot make a game! Otherwise, if you do not show up your opponent will have no one to play for that round. No shows are one of the largest issues we face in an online tournament like this.

No-Show Opponents: Players have 20 minutes to show up for their game after the start of the round. If they do not show up in 20 minutes, they will receive a bye-loss. If you fail to show up to a round without notifying the TD, you will be dropped from the tournament. You may re-enter the tournament at a later round if you connect with the TD.

Handicaps: Games will be even in most sections, with a compensation to white (komi) of 7.5 points. In handicap games, komi for white is 0.5 points. In the lower kyu sections the TD will assign handicaps based on rank -2, with a cap of 4 handicap stones. (Example: a 7k and a 5k will play even, but a 5k will give a 9k a two stone handicap.)

Rules: AGA rules will be used. Komi for white is 7.5 points in an even game.

Prizes: Top players in each section will receive awards. Award sections will be divided based on the number of participants at each entering rank.
