It is a long drive, so plan ahead. Once you get to the Johnson Ridge Observatory, you might get lucky to see steam coming from the lava dome inside the crater. Check out the volcano cam (http://www.mountsthelens.com/volcanocamera.html) on the web page to see what’s happening on any given day. The images update every 5 minutes.

Directions:

Head South on I-5 and take exit 49 and take highway 504. There are a few visitor centers (Seaquest at mile 8, Mt. St. Helens Forest Learning Center at mile 33) along the way, but at mile 52 is the Johnson Ridge Observatory
