http://empmuseum.org/ 206-770-2700. EMP is a leading-edge, nonprofit museum, dedicated to the ideas and risk-taking that fuel contemporary popular culture. EMP serves as a gateway museum, reaching multigenerational audiences through its collections, exhibitions, and educational programs, using interactive technologies to engage and empower its visitors. Paul Allen (co-founder of Microsoft) first conceived the EMP to house a tribute to and the artifcats of Jimi Hendrix, who, is one of the first great rock artists who call Seattle home (can you name 5 others?). Frank O. Gehry designed the museum in the shape of a smashed guitar. The guitar pieces were the building blocks for an early model design. Influenced by the colors in the early model, Gehry’s final design brightly displays the red and blue hues of electric guitars.
Founded in 1996, the Science Fiction Hall of Fame was relocated from the Gunn Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas to its permanent home at EMP in 2004. Hall of Fame nominations are submitted by EMP members. The final inductees are chosen by a panel of award-winning science fiction authors, artists, editors, publishers, and film professionals.
Directions: From I-5 North or South: Take exit #167 and follow the directional signs to Seattle Center. Merge onto Mercer Street, continue on Broad, and turn right on Harrison Street. EMP will be on the left.
Parking:
Ample street parking and pay lots surround EMP and Seattle Center. There is a pay lot next to EMP at 5th Avenue N and Harrison Street. This is the only Seattle Center lot where oversized vehicles, including but not limited to school buses, motor coaches and recreational vehicles, may park. Designated handicapped parking spaces are available at all Seattle Center lots.
