In 1959 the artist Edward E. Carlson, then president of Western International Hotels drew his design for the Space Needle, the focus of the futuristic World’s Fair in Seattle, whose theme would be Century 21.
Riding up the elevator: 10 seconds: see the sparkling waters of Puget Sound. 20 seconds: Mt. Rainier becomes a huge snow cone. 30 seconds: skyscrapers appear like giant Legos. 41 seconds: you’re up saying “Ohhhhhhhh” on the O Deck. Snow-capped Mt. Rainier to the south and the Cascade Mountains to the east, the majestic Olympics to the west.
Want to get closer to the action from your perch? No problem. Our complimentary Swarovski Telescopes magically empower you to spot a friend in the stands buying a hot dog a couple of miles away at Safeco Field, home of the Seattle Mariners baseball team.
A definite “do not miss” is a lunch or dinner atop the Space Needle in the Sky City Restaurant. Everything here is fresh, the food, the conversation, even the view! Yes, the entire restaurant moves 360 degrees allowing you to take in each course of the city as you take in each delicious course of your meal. The elevator ride and O Deck are on us when you dine!
Try the Lunar Orbiter dessert served up since 1962. Just don’t lick it!
To get to the Space Needle from I-5 (from the North or South): From I-5 take exit number 167 towards MERCER ST./SEATTLE CENTER Continue straight on Mercer Street until it merges with Broad Street Continue on Broad Street 0.6 miles to the intersection of 4th Avenue North and Broad Street Turn right Congratulations!
